1. TWILIGHT HOME

Now the tick warm cream light fades down into the mist from the sea
Three surfers - tiny black specks out across in the great waves
Lanterns of the little town over on the hill - twilight sweet homecoming
It's all the same
And these things we hold in our hearts
Like a promise in the salt of our blood
Until we come home

And always the breathing of the breaking surf
Drifts through the curtains and through our dreaming
And these things we hold in ourselves
Like a promise in the salt of our blood
Until we come home

2. BLUE SHIP

Isaac tied upon the bow searches for Land
Milton's hands upon the wheel steering us on
Seventy souls upon the deck and may God saves us all
The strange brotherhood of the blue ship

And Rolff watches over the edge counting the fishes
Lost upon the drifting tide and pull of the moon
They said there's water running in all our veins as they cast us off
Pulled forever back and on, back and on
The strange brotherhood of the blue ship

There is no wind that I can feel
There is no place for us to be
Just the strange brotherhood of the blue ship

3. OCEAN RISING

I dream of the ocean and the beautiful skies rolling out to sea
I dream of the ocean and the rip of the tide west of Finnstair
The weight of the water pouring down, holding on to me
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

I dream of the ocean - through the night the ghosts are sailing still
The James Caird steering east by north-east through the wild Atlantic smell
The men lie soaked and cold beneath the sail on a bed of ballast stone
They hear the boos cry out - I can see them now, the snow-capped peaks of land
But it was the ocean, rising, rising
A forty held their breath and prayed to God in the hour of death
To save them
From the ocean, rising, rising
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

And so the years they flow and journey's end
The old crew sailed south again
And they buried the boss by the melting snow
In the summer winds on the island
And now the ice it cracks and falls away, driven in the storms
And I'll be there - where the sky touches the sea
At the edge of the ocean where the beautiful world fades into grey
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising
I dream of the ocean, rising, rising

4. SENTRY

Waiting in the setting sun at the end of the road
The armies have moved away like the fading gold
I stand sentry by the rusting gate but no one comes
Nothing moves this way in the valley of stone
The evening shadows steal across the hills
And only the seasons change, only the seasons change

And I've seen so much more than I wanted to see
The flies all swarming round in the blistering heat
Layer upon Layer here of the same old curse
The red blood draining down into the blood red earth
In the end we all tell these stories just the same
And only the names are changed, only names are changed
The emptiness rising, falling like the seas
Their voices are just the whispers in the trees

I lock the chain upon the gate for the end of the day
I clean the gun that I'll never use and lay it away
As the stars spread like splinters of the sun
And only the seasons change, only the seasons change

5. TALES OF THE ROAD

The caravan flipped over two, three times
Went spinning down the carriageway
Breaking up into splinters
Wheels turning around in the dust at the foot of the hill
And all the old clothes, the pots and pans and the photographs
The little things of those people's lives
Lay strewn across the road
Ch: We just want what we cannot have
We've driven so far, we can never get back
Sitting in the all night cafe in a curl of smoke
Telling tales of the road

By the glow of a flickering lighter
We went stumbling forward through the corridor
Up the broken stairway to the top of the trail of shattered glass
Damp mattresses in the doorway, an old abandoned take-away
Nothing much to tell us if and where you'd gone
By now you could be miles away
Ch: We just want what we cannot have
We've driven so far, we can never get back
Sitting in the all night cafe in a curl of smoke
Telling tales of the road

And everyone just keeps moving on, you turn around and find them gone
The lights go out one by one, the prodigal son is not coming home
Down at the Ferrybridge junction
Beneath the cooling towers a man stood hitching a ride
And in the long grass at the side of the road his son was laid asleep
He said - nothing's left to keep us in the city where we come from
Take us far away from here - looking for work and the wishing-well
This afternoon the sunlight spilled shadows across the golden hills
They searched us at the border but they're not looking for what we're hiding
They're not looking for what we're hiding
Ch: We just want what we cannot have
We've driven so far, we can never get back
Sitting in the all night cafe in a curl of smoke
Telling tales of the road

6. NAVIGATING BY THE STARS

I must have been looking in all the wrong places
From island to island across the blue
Land astern we're setting sail into the yonder
We'll be navigating by the stars

747 into the morning
High above the ocean and the curve of the earth
All the way from somewhere back, forty nights all lost in dreaming
Still navigating by the stars

Bound forever, still driving home
In the cool of the darkness on the silent road
Rising up before us now, the hanging trees and the looming mountains
Still navigating by the stars

7. SUN ON WATER

All through the night we were battered by storms in the darkness
But at dawn the wind dropped away and we sighted the land
Suddenly there, a break in the cloud, like the coming of God in the world
In diamond of sun on the water
Diamond of sun on the water

Somewhere beneath the noise of our lives there is stillness
In points of light from the fireflies to the stars
Where arm in arm, come Abel and Cain, walking down to the sea
To gaze at the sun on the water
Just to gaze at the sun on the water

Once all our paths les us onwards
Now they are guiding us home
From the coasts of the kings, we are returning
One by one

Now from desks in the cities with faraway eyes
All staring out over the roofs
We're dreaming of sun on the water
Dreaming of sun on the water

8. GHOST TRAIN

It's a long warm September and we're both still alive
And the sea is like a painting beneath the neon sky
Raise the dead, raise the dead
We'll go riding on the ghost train, together raise the dead

Through the summer scented shadows, we were frozen in the light
And She brushed upon our faces, disappeared into the night
Raise the dead, raise the dead
We'll go riding on the ghost train, together raise the dead

9. GREEN

Green is what I see when I clone my eyes drifting out here
The colour of the forests and the uniforms and the bottles of beer
Flying inlow above the cedar trees through the soaking air
Our voices raised high against the rotor blades and the beating of fear
So long ago

Green is what I was last time I saw my family
I was hungry then for anything and everything
The world could throw at me
Then we were sweeping over lands that I never knew were there
With half a pound of dope and cigarettes
For the soldiers on either side
Of the burning bridge

They slipped us out but I never went home
Driving timber on these mountain roads
You skip a best and seven years go by

Tonight again i'll dream I'm walking across the room in the moonlight
I'll throw the windows open wide, smell the falling dew outside

10.HOME

Out in the street beneath the rolling sky
Sometimes they give, sometimes they pass by
It's the random falling as the wheel of fortune spins
And home is wherever they take you in

The chemical wind burned you to the bone
And when you came back, you were not the same
It took the kindness of strangers to bring you in
Because home is wherever they take you in

Chris, you were gone, out on the edge
These things that destroy are inside of ourselves
It's always the kindness of strangers to wash away these sins
Because home is wherever they take you in

11. CHANGING OF THE LIGHT

The sky is broken in grey and in silver, the wind blows clean
We watch the shadows chase across the hillside and out to sea
You and I, we're nearly full circle, it's just a touch away
And all the seeds we've sown in a lifetime
They'll come good some day
Pain is what you live with
And try to change the subject
In the dark the hands reach out
But I still feel the wonder
As the sky turns to fire
A catching in the heart
Standing between the worlds
In the changing of the light

Across the desert the wise men travelled - following a dream
I see the same star shining above us - endlessly
Pain is what you live with
And try to change the subject
In the dark the hands reach out
But I still feel the wonder
As the sky turns to fire
A catching in the heart
Standing between the worlds
In the changing of the light

12. APOCALYPSE DREAM

I went up to the mountain, apocalypse dreams in my head
There was fire upon the horizon but it was just the sunrise turning red
Maybe it's time, maybe it's time . . .

Each night I walk to the edge of the city out to where the darkness begins
I made a promise out here a long time ago and I've been waiting ever since
Maybe it's time, maybe it's time . . .

The world has become an empty place
Of great, wide landscapes and weird painted skies
Dawn breaking open in islands of light
And people move as shadows never touching at all
I've never been afraid to die . . .

I've been across every ocean just chasing after the storms
My crew long dead or deserted now and the seas nothing but calm
Maybe it's time, maybe it's time - to turn the ship around
